Web Applications Administrator
Thomas Jefferson Foundation, the private nonprofit that owns and operates Monticello, seeks a Web Applications Administrator to oversee the technical and strategic aspects of the Foundation’s websites and web applications which directly contributes to our mission of preservation and education.
This on-premises role is vital to maintaining, optimizing, and evolving our web applications to inform visitors, drive revenue, and support the Foundation’s strategic goals.
The ideal candidate will bring a blend of technical expertise, business analyst skills, and creative problem solving to our organization.
This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of the Foundation’s digital presence while working on a major website redesign in 2025.
Responsibilities
- Monticello.org Website Redesign & Architecture Update
: Lead a strategic project to develop an updated flagship website built on a new CMS platform in 2025. Work closely with internal/external resources and stakeholders, coordinate Foundation project tasks, and ensure the website/platform meets Foundation’s requirements from proposal selection to implementation.
Content Management Systems
Manage the configuration, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the Foundation’s content management systems, ensuring security, optimal performance, user experience, and functionality.
- Websites
: Ensure Foundation websites (CMS and non-CMS based) are secure, responsive, and support functionality needed by stakeholders.
- Accessibility
: Using web accessibility guidelines, such as WCAG, to make sure current and future Foundation websites and web applications are accessible and usable to as wide an audience as possible.
Analytics & Performance Tracking
Closely monitor and report on website performance, analyze visitor behavior, and generate actionable insights for improvements to conversions and engagement.
Project Management
Oversee website-related projects and updates, managing vendors/consultants, timelines, and ensuring effective collaboration between internal and external stakeholders.
Compliance
Ensure our web applications and related data collected comply with Foundation policies on cybersecurity, data privacy, and data security.
Skills and Abilities
- Use technical skills to address website and web application issues or lead projects with development resources to resolve issues as needed.
- Experience with CMS platforms and strong understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, including experience with APIs and configuring/monitoring system integrations.
- Understanding of web development concepts such as requirement definition, design documentation, user-acceptance testing, code promotion, and security scanning.
- Familiarity with standard metrics of website performance, website visitor insights, engagement, and conversions through data sources such as Google Analytics, Hotjar, and others. Understanding these metrics in the context of a nonprofit organization is a plus.
- Direct technical project management experience with multiple stakeholders; experience with projects using internal and external resources is a plus.
- Good understanding of cybersecurity, data security, and data privacy concepts in the context of websites and web applications.
- Can translate requirements from non-technical teams into actionable changes to websites and web applications.
- Able to produce proposals for change based on data-driven insights.
- Skilled in problem solving of technical issues and communicating resolutions, root causes, or progress reports to an audience with mixed technical expertise.
Certifications
- Google Analytics GA4 Certification required.
- Project management related certifications including PMP or CSM are a plus.
- Shopify e-commerce related certifications are a plus.
- Data privacy related certifications including CIPP or CIPT are a plus.
Educational Background
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training and related experience in web application development, web application management, computer science, or information technology.
Experience
- 3-5 years of experience in website development/administration, web application development/administration, or related areas with a proven history managing cross-functional websites and web applications.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, and use websites and web applications to drive an organization’s strategic goals.
- Experience with technical projects for nonprofit organizations, historical sites, or cultural institutions is beneficial but not required.
